assemble controller

The Halo Chlorinator must be mounted to a wall using the supplied steel mounting bracket (see Figure 1). The following diagram shows the position of the mounting bracket, in relation to the top and bottom of the product, which will help define the area of the equipment and align it with other Halo products. If the controller is mounted on a pole, a 320mm*320mm flat plate should be used. The Halo chlorinator can be used to communicate with other Halo devices via Bluetooth, therefore the chlorinator should be located within 5m of the pH and ORP sensors and other devices paired with it, eg Halo LITE, Halo Xpand or Halo Axis. The controller should be located 1 meter above the ground to avoid splashing or spraying on the bottom of the controller and should preferably be mounted out of direct sunlight.ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (6)

pool plumbing

The chlorinator cell must be installed in a position 1.2 meters from the controller, where it is the last piece of equipment in the line, before the water returns to the pool. (Unless acid doser is installed, in which case the acid doser injection point is the last piece of equipment). The cubicle must be installed horizontally, with the cylindrical connections below (as shown in the following image). The flow of water through the cell should be as shown below (also shown on the cell label). The cell kit contains 40mm and 50mm accessories. In general, 50mm tubing provides better water flow through the equipment and can ensure a more efficient system. The 4-wire cable from the chlorinator to the cell is color coded. Loosen the cell cap and connect the cell cable wires to the cell, making sure the color codes are followed. If an acid metering pump is installed, it must be separated from other equipment to avoid the possibility of vapors damaging other equipment. The acid injection point (where the acid goes into the pool water) should be mounted in the pipeline, after the chlorine cell and all other equipment (see acid dosing pump instructions for more information). If pH or chlorine sensors are installed, the sensor mounting chamber should be mounted after the filter but before the chlorinator cell (see sensor probe instructions for more information).ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (7)power connections

Halo chlorinators are supplied with a 1.75m power cord for connection to a mains socket. The maximum load that can be connected to the Halo Chlorinator pump output is 8.5 amps.

General operation and chemistry of the pool

cyanuric acid

(Also known as stabilizer or sunscreen) If a chlorine sensor is connected, cyanuric acid will suppress the ORP (chlorine) reading. While many suppliers recommend up to 50 ppm cyanuric acid (CyA), AstralPool recommends a maximum of 20 ppm cyanuric acid in Halo chlorinators.

Chlorine/ORP level

The recommended free chlorine level is 1-3 ppm. If your Halo chlorinator is not equipped with a chlorine (ORP) sensor, the chlorine output is set in the setup menu and can be adjusted from 0 (OFF) to 8. It is recommended to run the chlorinator on level 8 for 6-8 hours a day. (4-5 hours in low season). Typically 2 timers are used to achieve the desired run time, eg 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon/evening. To obtain the free chlorine level from 1 to 3 ppm, the chlorine output or timers can be adjusted. If your Halo chlorinator is equipped with a chlorine (ORP) sensor, as noted above, 2 timers are used to achieve 8 hours of operation, 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon/evening, and the timer must be set. ORP set point to reach the level of 1-3 ppm. There are many factors that affect ORP readings, such as pH, salt level, and cyanuric acid. Generally, an ORP level of 700 is a good starting point. If the free chlorine level is too low, increase the ORP set point (lower the set point to reduce free chlorine). When making adjustments, it is recommended to make small changes (eg 700-715) and wait 2 days before retesting for free chlorine.

pH level

For fiberglass pools, a pH level between 7.2 and 7.4 is recommended. For all other pools, a pH level between 7.4 and 7.6 is recommended.

total alkalinity
A total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm is recommended.

salt level
Never add salt to the pool skimmer box. The salt should be gradually added to the pool and brushed on until dissolved. A salt level of 4000 ppm is recommended. (A 50,000 liter pool will require 200 kg of salt to reach this level). If the salt level falls below 3000 ppm, the chlorinator will display “Salt Low” and more salt should be added to the pool. NOTE: When the water is cold (less than 16°), the chlorinator may display "Low Salt". If the salt level is really correct, this warning can be ignored. The chlorinator does not consume salt, but it is lost during backwashing and splashing, etc.

IA Moda
Ai mode is available on Halo chlorinators equipped with pH and ORP sensors and a variable speed pump. In Ai mode, the chlorinator automatically adjusts the pump speed for proper filtration and disinfection. At the beginning of the day the pump will run for a period at high speed and as the ORP (chlorine) level increases it will automatically switch to medium speed. Once the ORP is within range, the pump will slow down to low speed and only sample the
water (no chlorine production). If the ORP drops, the pump speed will increase again and the chlorinator will start producing chlorine again. In Ai mode, the pump speeds should be set so that the low speed delivers enough water to allow ORP measurement. (A typical starting point is 1200 RPM.) In this mode, no chlorine is produced. It is just a sampling mode. The average speed must be fast enough to keep the chlorinator cell full of water during chlorine production. (A typical starting point is 2000 RPM.) To save energy, it is important not to run the pump too fast during this time. The high speed is usually set to allow adequate removal from the water surface and is usually close to the maximum speed of the pump (2850 RPM). Timers can typically be set to a longer period (covering times when the pool can be used) when using Ai mode to ensure the chlorine level is always optimized. (In areas where there is a lot of leaf debris, it is also good practice to have a timer to run the pump at high speed to clean the pool at the end of the day.)

Introduction to Chlorinator Touch Screen

Starting screen

The default screen for the Halo chlorinator is the "Home" screen. The items on this screen will vary depending on the installation. This example assumes that a variable speed pump, pH and ORP probes, and a temperature sensor are installed. The text area at the top center of the screen is used to describe the mode the chlorinator is in. adjusted, the results will be displayed in green if the results are close to the reference point, in orange if they are below the reference point and in red if they are above the reference pointASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (8)

Any system faults will also be displayed in red in this area. By clicking the "?" will provide more information about the failure. See figure 7.ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (9)

maintenance screen

The "Maintenance" page is accessed through the settings icon on the home page. The “Maintenance” page is used to perform simple pool maintenance operations. In this example, the pool has an acid dispenser and chemical detection probes. (Other facilities will have fewer options.)ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (21)

disinfect

The options here are:

  • Sanitize Until First Morning Timer – If this option is selected, the chlorinator will run the filter pump and chlorinate until the first filter timer period ends the next day. The chlorinator will then return to "Auto" mode.
  • Filter by period
  • If selected, you will have the option to run the filter pump for up to 24 hours. The chlorinator will NOT produce chlorine during this time. (This setting is often used to “prime” a pool, add salt, etc., and balance the water chemistry before starting to chlorinate.)

hangover
This button allows you to backwash the filter between 1 and 15 minutes. During this period the chlorinator does not produce chlorine.

Calibrate Sensors

  • This button allows you to calibrate your pH or chlorine sensors. There is an option to "Run the pump during calibration".
  • If the sensors are still in place in the pool piping, the pump should run during calibration. To ensure that the pool water is well mixed, it is recommended to run the filter pump for at least one hour before calibrating.
  • If the sensors were removed and placed in the calibration fluid, the pump should not run during calibration.
  • For pH sensors, if you notice that your pH measurement is slightly different from a measurement from your pool store, or a test strip, etc., you can use the "Run Pump During Calibration" option and adjust the sensor reading. up or down to match the other reading. Alternatively, you can choose not to run the pump during calibration and use pH calibration fluid to calibrate the pH probe. (The calibration fluid is available from AstralPool® distributors).
  • For ORP sensors, differences in pool chemistry (salt level, pH, cyanuric acid “stabilizer”, hardness, etc.) make comparisons between the ORP level and measured levels of free chlorine ( ppm chlorine) are extremely difficult.
  • Because of this, calibrating the ORP sensor with pool water is of little value, so if you want to calibrate (or verify performance) of the ORP sensor, you should not use the "Run pump during calibration" option and the sensor The ORP test must be removed from the pipeline and calibrated with calibration fluid. (The calibration fluid is available from AstralPool® distributors).

acid base handbook

This button allows you to operate the acid dosing pump in manual mode to fill the entire pipeline with acid after replacing an empty acid drum. In this mode, the dosing pump will run for 30 seconds. If this time is insufficient, it can be executed again. This mode can be canceled at any time.

Deactivation of acid dosing
This button allows you to turn acid dosing off indefinitely or for a period of between 1 minute and 24 hours. For example, if you ran out of acid, you might want to turn off your acid dosing pump indefinitely (until you buy more acid), or if you added baking soda to increase alkalinity, you might want to turn dosing off for 24 hours. (After this period, the dosing pump will resume normal operation.)

Manual dosing of acid
This button allows you to choose to dispense a specific amount of acid into the pool. The filter pump will start automatically during this manual dosing. You can select whether you want the filter pump to be on, off, or in automatic mode at the end of the dispense period.

Connecting Other Devices to a Halo Chlorinator

Below is information on other Halo devices that can be connected to a Halo chlorinator. (See the instructions for each device for installation instructions.)

pH Halo doses
A Halo pH doser can be connected to a Halo chlorinator via the "pH dose" connector. This connector powers the dosing unit and no other electrical connections are required. The pH meter kit contains the necessary tubing and connectors, along with installation instructions. Halo LITE2 and Halo LITE4 A total of 2 Halo LITEs can be connected wirelessly to a Halo chlorinator. (2 LITE2 or 2 LITE4 or 1 of each). If one Halo LITE 4 is connected wirelessly, up to 4 more Halo LITE 4s can be connected via RJ12 cables. Halo Hub and Halo Xpand Only 1 Halo Hub can be connected to a Halo chlorinator. If a Halo Hub is connected, you can also connect a Halo Xpand. If a Halo Hub is not connected, you can connect up to 2 Halo Xpands. Halo Hubs and Xpands connect wirelessly to the Halo chlorinator.

Halo chlorinators can also be connected to Viron® Connect 10 systems.

This connection is made using traditional RJ12 cables. Installation of the chlorinator in this application is similar to the installation instructions above (including chemical detection probes, pH doser, and Halo LITE), however, as with other Viron Connect 10 systems, timer functionality is limited. controlled by Connect 10. Hubs and Xpands cannot be used. in Viron Connect 10 systems. An AstralPool Connect LITE can also be connected to a Halo chlorinator using RJ12 cables. Appendix 1 provides information on connecting heaters to Halo Control systems using the Halo chlorinator. It is recommended to run the chlorinator for 6 to 8 hours (or more if using Ai mode) per day during summer (4 to 5 hours in the off-season). To set timers, press "Timers" on the top banner of the home page. Typically 2 timers are used to achieve the desired run time, eg 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon/evening. However, if a variable speed pump is installed, it is generally more efficient to run at medium speed for most of the timer period; so in this case you can have timer 1 for 1 hour on high speed (to skim leaves from the pool), timer 2 for 3 hours on medium speed, and timer 3 for 4 hours on medium speed. The home page also provides information on the status of the chlorinator. (In this example, a variable speed pump is installed, along with chlorine and pH sensors.) The first line of the screen shows the status of the filter pump, for example, in automatic mode, “Disinfection” shows that the filter pump is working, “Standby” indicates that the filter pump is not working, but the next timer will turn it on again.ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (42)

standard chlorinator

The amount of chlorine produced is controlled by the "Chlorine Level" slider. In pool mode this can be adjusted from 0 to 8, and in spa mode the setting is from 0 to 4. (The pool and spa settings are independent of each other.)ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (43)

Standard chlorinator with pH dosing
As stated above, the amount of chlorine produced is controlled by the "Chlorine Level" slider. The "Acid Level" slider is used to estimate the amount of acid that needs to be added. Level 5 is generally a good starting point, but can be adjusted to increase or decrease the amount of acid dispensed. Acid dosing can be disabled for a period if needed via the "Maintenance" icon (to add this feature order part number 20389).ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (44)

Standard chlorinator with pH sensor
As in case 1 above, the amount of chlorine produced is controlled by the "Chlorine level" slider. And the pH is controlled by setting the pH level on the settings page. The actual pH will be displayed on the home page. The previous pH setting will be displayed when the pump is off (to add this feature, order part number 20390).ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (45)

Standard chlorinator with chlorine and pH sensor
In this setting, the chlorine level is set by adjusting the ORP level (higher ORP => higher chlorine level). Please note that it may take several days for your settings to be seen in the group. Using the "Statistics" icon will show the % output of the cell yesterday. This is useful for determining the filter pump timer setting. Generally, if this value is greater than 80%, you should increase the filter pump time (to add this feature, order part number 20391).ASTRALPOOL HALO CHLOR high performance chlorinator installation guide - Manuals+ (46)

Control via Halo ChlorGo app
See section 4.8 for application installation instructions. Control with the Halo ChlorGo app is essentially the same as with the Chlorinator, however the icons are located on the bottom strip instead of the top. Some maintenance functions are not allowed in the app, as you need to control the chlorinator to perform them. There is no installation feature available in the app. On the "Settings" page of the app, there is a date and time setting. If selected, there will be an option to update the time and date automatically. If auto update is selected, every time you connect to the chlorinator via Bluetooth or local connection, the time will be updated. Some WiFi routers (particularly in commercial properties) are configured to block "UDP" communications. If you disable WiFi on your phone, you can communicate with your chlorinator through your phone's Internet connection
