There are several ways to buy tickets for our trains.
Buy tickets:

- From our ticket machines at our train stations.
Advance payment:These tickets are purchased prior to travel (subject to availability). Advance tickets are single (one-way) fares that offer excellent value for long-distance travel.
Off peak times:These cheaper tickets are valid for travel at quieter times of the day and all day on weekends. Blackout times vary by journey and will be advised to you when you purchase your ticket.
Super Off-Peak:These are the cheapest tickets you can buy on the day and are available on select journeys. They do not apply to journeys during peak hours, but are valid at any time on weekends. Blackout times vary by journey and will be advised to you when you purchase your ticket.
Whenever:There are no restrictions on these tickets. These are the most flexible self-drive fares: there are no time restrictions and they are suitable for people who need total flexibility.

Smart cards are more secure, durable and flexible than their paper counterparts.
- Secure.If your smart card is lost or stolen, you can lock it so no one can use it. You can do this yourself via your online account or by calling us on 03456 005 165.
- Continuous.No more queuing to change your tickets when they disappear or the magnetic stripe wears out.
- Flexible.You can buy tickets online or via the Chiltern App.
- Comfortable.You can store more than one ticket on your card at the same time: a smart card can store up to 5 tickets. One card, many trips.
Seasonal passes, including Travelcard seasons, and many one-off and daily returns are available for smart card holders. More types of travel and tickets will become available throughout 2019, so check our website for the latest options.
If you buy your ticket online, you will be asked to select the station at the start of your journey. To collect your ticket at the station, simply tap your card on the yellow gate reader. If your station doesn't have a barrier, you can also top up by touching the smart card reader at the ticket machine. You can also collect your tickets from any PayPoint location or download your tickets using the Chiltern app on an NFC-enabled smartphone. Your ticket will be loaded onto your smart card and you are ready to travel (please allow 2 hours loading time from purchase if picking up your ticket at a gate).

An income examiner may occasionally ask for photo ID. This can be a National Rail photo card (available from any of our ticket offices), or you may prefer to show your driver's license or other government-issued photo ID.

No. Your smart card is reusable. When your season pass expires, you can log into your online account to purchase a new one. Your expired ticket will be removed from your card the next time you touch the barrier reader.

We do not offer seat reservations on our trains.
When booking tickets from other railway companies, you have the option of choosing your preferences such as table, sockets and direction of travel, provided seat reservations are available. These preferences can be saved in your booking profile.

If your ticket is an Anytime, Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak fare and you wish to transfer, we recommend that you cancel and rebook for a refund.

If you have bought train tickets for any route, you can use them with other train companies. If you have purchased tickets for a specific train company such as Chiltern Railways, it is not possible to transfer train tickets. You must cancel your original tickets and rebook for another trip.

Tickets purchased with the "any route available" option can be used on any train company operating between the stations you wish to travel to.
Anytime tickets are the most flexible and can be used on any train on the selected departure date for the journey you have booked. With an Anytime ticket, you can return on any train within the dates shown on your ticket.
Advance tickets are the cheapest tickets available but can only be used on the selected train on a specific date and time. They are non-refundable and if you miss your train you will need to buy a new ticket to travel.
If you have purchased an Anytime, Off Peak or Super Off Peak ticket, you must travel within the times specified in the Terms and Conditions. See the question "What is the difference between Anytime, Off Peak and Super Off Peak?" for more information.

We offer Ranger/Rover tickets which allow unlimited travel in a specific area. These are:
Day rangers of the West Midlands: Valid in the Network West Midlands area and surrounding areas.
Oyster Cards can be used in two ways:
1. A Travelcard season ticket can be purchased which is valid for one or more London fare zones. You can use your Oyster Travelcard on our services between Amersham and London Marylebone and between West Ruislip and London Marylebone inclusive (and any intermediate stations) as long as it's valid for or between the areas you wish to travel to. Please note that Oyster card season passes must be purchased from Transport for London.
2. Oyster Cards can also be used on a pay-as-you-go basis. On Chiltern Railways Pay as you go can be used between Amersham and London Marylebone and between West Ruislip and London Marylebone inclusive (and all intermediate stations).
Oyster Pay As You Go CANNOT be used to pay for other journeys on Chiltern Railways.
The route between London Marylebone and Amersham
If you're a Freedom Pass holder, you can use our services to travel between London Marylebone and Amersham in any direction (including intermediate stops to and from) for free at any time.
The route between London Marylebone and West Ruislip
Freedom Passes are also valid anytime between London Marylebone and West Ruislip (in both directions).except not before 09:30 on weekday mornings. However, for journeys between South Ruislip and West RuislipSOLOFreedom passes are valid at all times.

Yes, the card is valid for single journeys, return journeys and season tickets. It was designed to give 16 and 17 year olds access to the same half-price child fares that they had access to until the age of 16.
16-17 Saver offers a different discount tier than the existing 16-25 rail card, which is intended for leisure travel. The 16-25 rail ticket has a minimum fare of £12 for journeys departing between 4:30am and 4:30pm. M. and 10:00 a.m. M. on weekdays and is therefore less useful for traveling to and from school or training. There are few restrictions associated with 16-17 Saver, as cardholders are entitled to half-price fares, even season tickets, and no minimum fares.
Youngsters must remain in training until the age of 18, but only have half-price access to the children's railway until the age of 16. This new card aims to fill that gap and offer two additional years of child fares to support young people.
