Snapchat has started rolling out a new “Send and Request” location sharing

Snapchat has started rolling out a new “Send and Request” location sharing feature, according to TechCrunch. From your introduction, you can broadcast your location to all your friends, select friends or no one using Snap Map. This new feature is still based on Snap Map, but offers another way to share your whereabouts directly with friends. And as always, you need to enable location features on Snapchat.

You can access the new feature by long-pressing on a friend's name or by tapping on the hamburger menu in a chat thread. There you will find new buttons to send your location or request your friend's - the map with this information will appear in your private conversation. You also don't have to worry about random people asking for your location: the feature will only appear for mutual friends, and you can always turn off requests if you'd rather not receive any.

If you share your location with someone, it will only work for eight hours after you last opened the app. You can also cancel access at any time. Snapchat confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature has been rolled out to iOS and Android users in recent weeks.

Update 5/225/18 1:19 PM m. ET:This post has been updated to clarify details about the "Send and Request" feature, including that you can always choose to share your location with select friends within the app. Location tools on Snapchat are and were optional.

Know if someone is ghosted on Snapchat

Snapchat features are quite unique and complicated, it will require you to know them and how they work. They provide their users with an amazing feature called ghost mode. But it is different when someone from your friends list is using ghost mode or has activated ghost mode on Snapchat.

Moving on to the next points where you can find some tips on how to detect if someone in your Snapchat friend list is in ghost mode.

  • If your friend's live location is frozen or you can't see it, it's because that person is using ghost mode, which is a member feature that allows the user to be in confidential mode. You won't be able to see his location for a while, but certainly after they turn off.
  • Another change that you will notice, and by which you will also be able to tell if your friend is in ghost mode, is that you will see that their bitmoji has changed to a blue banner with a 👻 icon.
  • If the person using ghost mode has chosen to keep a blurry blue icon to show to their friends while in ghost mode, you or any other audience will find this on their profile picture on your Snap Map.

Snap today introduces a new feature called Map Explore that will alert and update users on what's happening on their Snap Map. Snap says travel and location updates will automatically appear on users' Snap Maps when friends choose to share their location. The feature will also display updates from Explore to Our Story snapshots, including the latest news and other events from around the world.

The new feature is an easier way for users to browse content on Snapchat based on location, which is a nifty tool if you want to see what's going on in other places... or see when your friends are hanging out without you.

Snap says it's introducing this tool to make updates easier to find. "We made Map Explore because we realized that when you open the map, you're not always sure where to start your journey," the company said in a statement. "Unless you've run away from your town, you may never see some of the amazing events our community captures."

Note that Map Explore updates are generated by actions your friends take in real life, "inferred from the locations where they open the app." This means that if your friend shares their location on the map but doesn't open the app within eight hours, their location will disappear. Only one status is visible to each user at any time, and each status can be viewed for up to 24 hours.

To access the feature, pinch out the camera screen when launching the app. Tap New updates at the bottom of the screen and swipe horizontally to scroll through updates from your friends and other Snap Map content. If you want to remove your status or enable ghost mode (which hides your location), tap the settings icon in the top right corner of the map.

Snapchat launched Snap Map last year as a tool to allow users to share their location with friends. Friends appear on the map as Bitmoji cartoons, and you can see the snaps they've shared based on location. Snap Map also has a collaborative "Our Story" section, which collects photos taken in a specific location that is popular. Snap Map location-based snapshots can also be embedded online.

The feature initially raised privacy concerns, but Snap says that sharing your location details on Snap Map is always optional and won't be shared unless you choose to do so.
