WHY DO I USE SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS?
SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS contains the active substance spironolactone.SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS works against a hormone called aldosterone. Excess aldosterone causes increased amounts of sodium (a mineral) and water to be retained by the kidneys, while excess potassium is removed from the body. SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS works against the effects of aldosterone and helps maintain normal blood potassium levels by retaining potassium in the body.
SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS is a liquid or diuretic tablet. Helps reduce the amount of excess fluid in the body by increasing the amount of urine produced. This also helps lower blood pressure. It can be given alone or with other diuretics (medicines used to remove fluid). It improves the effectiveness of other drugs used to lower blood pressure.
SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS is used:
to treat essential hypertension (high blood pressure of unknown cause)
to treat edematous disorders (swelling with fluid), including congestive heart failure
to diagnose and treat primary aldosteronism (a hormonal disorder that causes fluid retention)
as adjunctive therapy for malignant hypertension (a very severe form of high blood pressure)
if you have low levels of potassium (a mineral) in your blood caused by another diuretic (medicine used to remove fluid)
SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS potentiates the antihypertensive effects of thiazide diuretics while reducing or preventing the loss of potassium from these drugs
to prevent low levels of potassium in the blood in patients taking digitalis (a type of heart medicine).
to treat hirsutism (excessive facial or body hair in women).
All women produce small amounts of the male sex hormone testosterone. Women with excessive facial or body hair are usually particularly sensitive to the effects of testosterone on hair growth. SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS has a moderate ability to counteract testosterone (antiandrogenic effect). Therefore, SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS is effective in treating female hirsutism (excessive body hair). Reduces hair growth, thickness and color. Increased urinary flow is unlikely to be a problem when SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS is used to treat hirsutism. This is because aldosterone levels are usually not high in patients with hirsutism.
There is no evidence that SPIRONOLACTONE is addictive to VIATRIS.
What should I know before using SPIRONOLACTONE VIATRIS?
